Gaelic Football - The Basics

Men’s football. Where do we begin? This is one of the oldest field sports played in Ireland and is by far one of the most popular sports we play here at TCD GAA Soc!

It’s played as a team sport with two teams of 15 players a side. The game is 30 minutes each half, but can be 35 minutes a side for senior games. The aim of the sport is to score by kicking (or even punching!) the ball between too posts above the goals, for 1 point, or into the back of the goals for a goal which is the equivalent of 3 points.

Players can hold, bounce, ‘solo’, hand-pass & kick-pass the ball while advancing up the field. The positions in Gaelic Football are very similar to other styles of football in which there is a goal keeper, six backs, two midfielders and six forwards.

We are always looking for new players for our teams from beginner to senior level and would love to hear from you if you’re interested in joining!
